A new Aschelminth, probably related to the Priapulida Naturalis
Land, J. van der.
INTRODUCTION Two years ago I found two specimens of a curious animal in a sample of coral sand from Curaçao. It superficially resembled the larva of priapulids, animals that are restricted to cold water. The condition of the specimens did not permit of a description and I did not succeed in determining the group to which the species could possibly belong. Later I happened to see a paper by Remane (1963) in which he gives a simple figure of "a not yet described animal from the sandy bottom of the Red Sea". I immediately recognized it as a relative of the species from Curaçao. Upon request Professor Remane informed me that he had fixed some specimens, but that these were lost. He had not found more material of the species and he had not heard of these...

A new peritrichous Ciliate as a symphoriont on a Tardigrade Naturalis
Land, J. van der.
INTRODUCTION On 24 September 1962 a number of Tardigrada was obtained from a sample of lichens from the French Alps. The lichens had been collected Figs. 1, 2. Pyxidium tardigradum n. sp. on Hypsibius oberhaeuseri (Doy.). on 27 June 1961 from a rock in the department Haute Savoie and had been preserved in a dry condition for nearly fifteen months. After washing, living specimens of three different species of Tardigrada (Hypsibius oberhaeuseri (Doyère), Macrobiotus hufelandii Schultze and Echiniscus spec. were found, together with some eggs of Hypsibius oberhaeuseri and Macrobiotus hufelandii, a small number of Rotatoria and some dead Oribatid Acari. About twenty Protozoa appeared to be attached to one of the specimens of Hypsibius oberhaeuseri (fig. 1). It...

Branchiodrilus hortensis, een nieuwe exotische borstelworm in Nederland (Annelida: Oligochaeta) Naturalis
Haaren, T. van; Soes, M.; Munts, R..
Branchiodrilus hortensis, an exotic worm new for the Dutch fauna (Annelida: Oligochaeta) The peculiar naidid worm Branchiodrilus hortensis (Stephenson, 1910) is recorded new for the Netherlands. In 2002 and 2003 several specimens were collected from three localities in and near the Giessen, a small, slow-flowing river near Gorinchem (province of Zuid-Holland). In 2004 numerous specimens were collected in the small river Aa in the city of Den Bosch (province of Noord-Brabant). These freshwater localities (Cl 50-143 mg/l) are eutrofic, slightly alkaline (pH 7.3-8.6) and with a reasonable oxygen-level (saturation > 70%). Branchiodrilus hortensis is known from southern Asia, Australia and Africa. It is not known how this species has become...

Chaetognatha of the genus Eukrohnia Von Ritter-Záhony in the material of the Snellius Expedition Naturalis
Schilp, H..
In 1875 K. Möbius described a new species of Chaetognatha under the name Sagitta hamata. Hertwig (1880) used the name Spadella hamata for it; Strodtmann (1892) called it Krohnia hamata and finally Von RitterZáhony (1909c) gave it the name Eukrohnia hamata. In this "Research" material Fowler (1905) found a few specimens of E. hamata which did not entirely agree with all the characters of Möbius's species; he regarded these specimens a separate variety, which he indicated as Krohnia hamata Möbius var. Von Ritter-Záhony (1909c) gave the name Eukrohnia fowleri to this form. In the material collected by the "Siboga" Expedition Fowler (1906) found only what he thought to be Krohnia hamata. He stated that none of the specimens was actually well preserved, but...

Soesbergen, M.; Rozier, W..
The significance of nature friendly banks for the aquatic invertebrate fauna The last 25 years the Ministry of Transport constructed more than 450 km of nature friendly banks along their waters to compensate the destruction of nature by defending the banks with stone and steel. In this study the differences in the composition of the aquatic invertebrate fauna between the traditional banks and the nature friendly banks was investigated. In nature friendly banks the number of species, diversity and the number of rare species increases and the distribution of the feeding guilds is more natural.

De tweekleppigen van het Noordzeekanaal (Mollusca: Bivalvia). Naturalis
Haaren, T. van; Tempelman, D..
The bivalves of the Noordzeekanaal (Mollusca: Bivalvia) In recent years, the macrobenthos of the Noordzeekanaal area, west of Amsterdam, has been surveyed intensively. The area consists of a main, brackish channel and a set of deep sea harbours. It was discovered that several bivalve species were present in large numbers. Many findings came as a surprise. Especially noteworthy is the presence of a (formerly unknown) sizeable population of lagoon cockle Cerastoderma glaucum. This species has only a sparce distribution in the Netherlands (and surrounding countries). Also, the sand gaper Mya arenaria was found to be remarkably common in many places. The false dark mussel Mytilopsis leucophaeata was already known to be abundant on stony substrate...

Distribution and ecology of Aulodrilus japonicus in the Netherlands (Oligochaeta: Tubificidae) Naturalis
Populaties van A....

Eight species of aquatic Oligochaeta new for the Netherlands (Annelida) Naturalis

Synarmadillo pallidus (Crutacea: Isopoda: Armadiliidae) Naturalis
Soesbergen, M..
summary And the name is .... Synarmadillo pallidus (Crustacea: Isopoda: Armadillidae) In Soesbergen (2003) an unidentified Synarmadillo species was mentioned as a first record for the Dutch fauna. The isopod was found in a greenhouse in the zoo of Blijdorp, Rotterdam. A study of the literature on Synarmadillo has now clarified the specific status: its name is Synarmadillo pallidus Arcangeli, 1950.

Faunistic survey of the marine bryozoans of the Netherlands (Bryozoa: Stenolaemata, Gymnolaemata) Older literature on marine bryozoans of the Netherlands often doesn’t distinguish between records of colonies washed ashore and autochthonous records. The first reliable review of autochthonous records was published by Heerebout (1970), the second and last by Mulder (1983). The present review is mainly based on data from a short regional survey. Forty-three brackish water and marine bryozoan species are now definitely known to occur in the Netherlands. Most of them are characteristic of sheltered, estuarine and brackish waters. The virtual absence of rocky and coarse grounds offshore is reflected in the fauna. Cyclostomatida and Cheilostomatida are...

Faunistisch overzicht van de Nederlandse kelkwormen (Entoprocta). Naturalis
Faasse, M.A..
Faunistic overview of the entoprocts of the Netherlands (Entoprocta) Five species of entoprocts are known to occur in the Netherlands: Pedicellina cernua, Barentsia benedeni, Barentsia gracilis, B. matsushimana and B. ramosa. Barentsia ramosa is recorded here for the second time from Europe, from the Nieuwe Waterweg, leading to the port of Rotterdam. The species was found for the first time in Europe in the Westerschelde (near Doel, Belgium), leading to the port of Antwerp. It could not be rediscovered at this locality, but may still be present. Pedicellina nutans has been recorded, but may be a synonym of Pedicellina cernua. As the validity of Pseudopedicellina mutabilis is questioned, the single record of this form from the Netherlands is treated...

The occurrence of the earthworm Allolobophora cupulifera in the Netherlands (Oligochaeta: Lumbricidae) First records are described of the occurrence of the earthworm Allolobophora cupulifera (Tétry, 1937) in the Netherlands. One population of this rare species was found in a grassland site on peaty clay soil in the Kortenbroek polder along the river Lek in the south-western part of the Netherlands. Another population was found in a grassland site on clay loam soil in the Afferdensche en Deestsche Waarden, a flood plain area (river foreland) of the river Waal in the centre of the Netherlands. The finding in moist habitats situated near water agrees with an ecological classification of A. cupulifera as a hygrophilous and relatively acid-tolerant riparian...

Naturalis
Boesveld, A.
The distribution of the land snails of the province of Noord-Brabant (Mollusca: Gastropoda) In 2003 and 2004 the landsnail fauna of the province of Noord-Brabant (in the south of the Netherlands) was mapped. In total 251 soil and litter samples were taken and on 272 localities records were gathered on sight. The large amount of new records contributes significantly to the knowledge of the land snail fauna of the province of Noord-Brabant and the Netherlands. In total 72 species were found in 2003 and 2004. No less than 13 species of the 41 land snails from the Dutch red list have been found in Noord-Brabant. Three of these could not be recovered during the inventories in 2003 and 2004. Of these, Limacus flavus probably is still present and was...
